Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the six-and-a-half-week long Season of Lent. The day is one of only two where Catholics are invited to spend the day in fasting and prayer (Good Friday being the other). Masses are penitential and feature the blessing and distribution of ashes. The palms from the previous year’s celebration of Passion Sunday are burned to create the ash.
In 2024, Ash Wednesday is on 14 February.
In 2025, Ash Wednesday is on 5 March.
